It begins with Eric and mead. Arizona has meaderies and thus far, they have been delicious. This particular Meadery is in Flagstaff. They will sell you a horn in which to drink your mead from. The observant will notice it is impossible to set a "horn" down. Of course, you keep your horn, and the memories of drinking it so long as you don't refill it too much. Luckily we had a short drive down to meet Eva and Vesta. .. image:: /images/sedona-vesta.jpg :width: 100% Friday was a bit windy. Also, Eric broke his bike within the first hundred feet or so. .. image:: /images/sedona-no-eric.jpg :width: 100% Eva and I rode around Slim Shady for a while. We quickly discovered when it comes to MTB skills, we are pretty close. In my experience, that really makes for great riding. Fortunately for Eric, a LBS was able to get his bike fixed in no time at all and we were back together. .. image:: /images/sedona-eric.jpg :width: 100% Eva had been in Sedona for a while and insisted on taking us Highline trail. I think it was the best trail of the weekend. Despite me screwing up slightly. {{% tf2 data_id=38269326 %}} Do you remember the wind? Because it was windy. As it turns out, the wind can move cyclists. This is what happened to me and my bike. Around midway through the descent of Highline there's what looks like a great natural table top. I barely boosted off of it going around 15mph and attaining maybe two feet of levitation. The wind was blowing perfectly perpendicular to my direction of travel and after lifting off the gust seemed to pick up. It blew me sideways, the bike folding underneath me. It is a nice strike of luck that I was able to skid along fairly smooth slick-rock. I received some nice road rash, a hole in my new biking shorts, and a still-usable-but-critically-damaged pedal. .. image:: /images/sedona-pedal.jpg :width: 100% We finished out Highline and its beautiful surrounding area. .. image:: /images/sedona-rocks-with-eric.jpg :width: 100% This might be a vortex. Yeah it was. We're 100% sure this was a vortex. .. image:: /images/sedona-rocks-with-eva-and-eric.jpg :width: 100% Day two came with lofty goals. That is, to attempt the other Sedona "classic": Hangover trail. .. image:: /images/sedona-hangover.jpg :width: 100% It's kind of a haul to get to. I opted for the single track climb while my companions stuck to the double track. {{% tf2 data_id=37541899 %}} We quickly decided that Hangover trail itself was beyond our abilities. Eric especially--riding with cleats--felt that even hiking his bike was too dangerous because the shoes did not grip the rock. That was fine, however, because the climb (and later what we descended) was quite fun. .. image:: /images/sedona-more-rocks.jpg :width: 100%
